Episode 003: Paleolithic Bone Knives

Today we are going paleo… but it’s probably not what you’re thinking.  Diet aside, I’m sure most of us have wondered what it would be like to live in the Stone Age.  After we find a nice bear-free cave to live in, one of our next jobs is going to be crafting a variety of tools and weapons.  Our Stone Age ancestors probably actually made most of their tools out of bone, not stone.

We are going to need a variety of knives, arrowheads, spear points, and fish hooks.  In this episode, we begin crafting our Paleolithic tool set out of a variety of deer and antelope bones.

Let’s fast-forward a bit.  Assuming that our tribe survives the early Stone Age (Paleolithic), we’re going to need some agricultural tools in the later part of the Stone Age (Neolithic).  In this episode, we also replicate a harvesting crafted from a deer jawbone hafted to a wooden handle using natural plant fiber.

As a side-note, using the jawbone to make a bone fish hook did not work at all.  In the future, I may try making some more fish hooks out of heavier bones.
